Gauteng accounts for 80% new Covid-19 cases

South Africa’s economic hub province of Gauteng accounted for 80% of new Covid-19 cases reported on Wednesday, with concern rising that the province could be entering a fourth wave and is once again the epicentre of the new wave.

Statistics released by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), show an increase of 1 275 new Covid-19 cases across the country.
This is a representation of a 3.6% positivity rate, which is also an increase over the past week.

The cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in the country now stands at 2 950 035.
A further 22 Covid-19 deaths have been reported, bringing the country’s fatalities to 89 657.
