Gauteng ANC names Hlongwa successor

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng has appointed Sochayile 'Socks' Khanyile as its new chief whip in the provincial legislature.

Khanyile's appointment comes a week after the resignation of Brian Hlongwa.
Hlongwa resigned last week amid accusations fraud and corruption during his tenure as the MEC of Health in Gauteng.
A Special Investigation Unit (SIU) report implicated him in fraud, corruption and nepotism to the tune of R1.2 billion between 2006 and 2009.
The ANC in Gauteng says Khanyile brings in a wealth of experience with him.
"In the legislature he served as chairperson of the safety portfolio committee and a member of oversight committee on the office of the premier and legislature.
"We are convinced that the activism of Khanyile as a seasoned activist of the mass democratic movement will bring invaluable organizational experience in the ANC caucus,” says provincial ANC spokesperson Tasneem Monara.
Khanyile previously served as chairperson of the ANC Youth League in Gauteng as well as a provincial executive committee member from 1996.
