Gauteng and Western Cape contribute to new rise in Covid-19 cases

An increase in the number of new Covid-19 cases Gauteng and the Western Cape has led to another sudden sharp rise new infections across the country.
Statistics released by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Wednesday show that both provinces collectively make up close to 52% of national cases.

In just one day, 13 263 new Covid-19 cases were identified in the country bringing the cumulative number of cases to 2 484 009.
This is a representation of a 22.3% positivity rate.

Deaths also continue to increase sharply with 423 reported in the latest 24-hour period.
To date, 73 415 Covid-19 related fatalities have been reported in the country.
Meanwhile, the country has also crossed a milestone in its vaccination drive, with over 8 million Covid-19 doses administered to the population.
