Gauteng approaching Covid-19 peak, says provincial govt

Gauteng has been the epicentre of the third wave of Covid-19 infections, which have been mainly driven by a more transmissible Delta variant.
In the first week of July, the province recorded a whopping 78 864 cases in just seven days.
The highest daily increase in the province was 16 102.
However, the number of infections has since slowed down, with 11 747 new cases recorded on Thursday.

While the numbers continue to decline, the province is not yet out of the woods.
A total of 102 857 active cases have been recorded in the province.
Hospitalisations are also still high with 8 606 patients receiving treatment.
One thousand eight-hundred-and-seventy are in ICU.
