Lesufi: Gauteng crime prevention wardens to operate around the clock
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has announced that the province’s crime prevention wardens will be deployed 24 hours a day from September.

Lesufi appointed 4000 crime prevention wardens in April in an effort to curb the high levels of crime in Gauteng.
Speaking in the Gauteng legislature on Tuesday, Lesufi said there is a clear need to bolster the province’s crime-fighting capabilities.
“We have close to 40 000 law enforcement agencies that need to police almost 16 million people, and from these figures alone, it is quite clear that we needed an extra police force to supplement the low number of law enforcement agencies.
“As a force multiplier, the crime prevention wardens have played a critical role in protecting our citizens and also ensuring that state events are also protected.”
Lesufi said the wardens will also be deployed to safeguard energy infrastructure.
“Crime prevention wardens will also be expected to ensure the prevention of infrastructure vandalism and cable theft that has harmed our energy distribution in our province.”
