Gauteng Education MEC wants cops at every school

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane says his department will request the deployment of a police officer to every school in the province.

Chiloane was reacting to the death of a father who was shot and killed outside the Faranani Primary School in Protea Glen on Tuesday.
The man was shot after he apparently tried to assist a hijacking victim.
Chiloane visited the school on Wednesday, and said more needs to be done to keep schools safe.
"The premier had announced that they will be recruiting 6000 new police officers. In that 6000 we will be requesting that schools should be guarded by police officials as part of the programme to apprehend .
"Not only in the morning, but we will want police officers to be stationed in our schools in the morning and in the afternoon."
Chiloane said there is no police station nearby the Soweto school.
"We have picked up that in this area there is no police station nearby. That is a matter that we will take up with the relevant authority, but what we will also be requesting is that, as and when the safety department deploys mobile police stations , those mobiles should be near schools.
"We need to do our best to defend and protect our children and schools. This is a learning environment, this is where we nurture future leaders. This is where we nurture the future of this country and we need to protect it with all we can."
