Gauteng Education: viral video girl arrested for not wearing mask
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The Gauteng Department of Education says the pupil seen assaulted
by the police in a viral video was arrested for not wearing a mask.

The video shows a young woman in a school uniform being dragged by one police member, while another officer seemingly assists him.
The police have since confirmed that the departmental investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway.
But Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says pupils from Hoërskool Jan de Klerk in Krugersdorp were walking without wearing their masks.
“We want to confirm that we are aware of the video which is doing the rounds. Initial investigations indicate that the video was captured yesterday – 4 August 2021. It is reported that learners from Hoërskool Jan de Klerk were walking without wearing their masks yesterday after school. They were subsequently stopped by the police who requested them to wear their masks; some of them gladly obliged.
“A learner refused to comply with the police request. She was then apprehended and taken to the police station. Her parents were then called in to come fetch her.”
Mabona says no case was opened against the pupil.
“Our psycho-social unit in the department was this morning dispatched to the school to offer counselling to all the affected learners.”
