Gauteng govt moving ahead with law to bar foreigners from doing business in townships
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Gauteng provincial government says the Township Economic Development Bill is at an advanced stage.

The bill, referred to as the Township Bill, is meant to help the provincial government revitalise the economy in the most densely populated areas.
It will also bar foreign nationals from doing business in the province’s townships unless they obtain permanent residency status.
“The Township Bill must look in other areas, are there certain areas that must be reserved solely for the exclusive of South Africans? That bill has been ongoing,” says Premier David Makhura’s spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga.

“The ultimate decision will be through public participation, the residents of Gauteng and ultimately it will come into law.
“It is not really something new, it is something that emanates from post-2019 elections. It is at an advanced stage in terms of the crafting of the proposal.”
