Premier Makhura and Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi handed over bursaries to 40 top performing learners from Quantile 1, 2 and 3 schools, catering for the poorest in society.

The provincial government is spending R296 million on the bursaries. It has also added an additional R16 million from the sale of Makhura's official residence in Bryanston.

With 26 percent of bursary recipients failing to complete their studies, Premier Makhura urged this year's recipients to take advantage of the opportunity.

"I will advise you that you should learn a lot when you are at university, including understanding student politics. That's part of growth, but when you do that you must not forget why you are at university," says Makhura.

Recipients say they are excited to be able to further their studies.

"I'm very excited to fill up the gap that's missing, especially black females in my career path," says one learner.
