Gauteng Health awaiting outcomes of probe into latest mental patient deaths

Five patients have died since the release of the Health Ombuds' report into the Life Esidimeni tragedy.

More than 100 mental patients died after they were improperly moved from Life Esidimeni to unlicensed health facilities in the province. 

 

Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa updated the media on the transfer of the surviving mental health patients this morning.

 

"Five patients have unfortunately died. The causes of death were cited as natural, but we have instructed that a post-mortem be conducted and we are awaiting the outcomes. .

 

"Our work as a department will not stop, will continue to work with stakeholders when the Ombuds' work is done," she said. 

 

Twenty NGOs have also been closed down by the Health Department in Gauteng, since the release of the report.
