Gauteng Health denies City Power debt of R32m
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Gauteng Department of Health has denied that it has R32 million in unpaid electricity bills for Helen Joseph and Rahima Moosa hospitals in Johannesburg.
City Power warned this week that it would take its revenue collection operation to the hospitals this week, saying the two facilities owe the city a combined R32 million.
It would form part of the city’s ongoing campaign to disconnect defaulting customers, including business and residential areas.
On Friday, the Health Department’s spokesperson Motalatale Modiba, hit back, saying there are no outstanding invoices at Helen Joseph.
"Helen Joseph Hospital does not owe City Power the stated amount of R23,4 million. There is, however, only one invoice that is outstanding for the month of June 2023, which City Power has not uploaded onto the E-Invoicing portal.
"In addition, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital’s payment of R2,7 million from July to August 2023 is being processed.
"The management for the two facilities met with City Power officials to present their case and only to find out that what is alleged to be due does not warranty power disconnection.
"The department continues to ensure that supplier payments are processed within 30- days subject to verification," he added.
