Gauteng Health denies plans to challenge Shonisani Lethole report

The Gauteng Department of Health has denied that it plans to challenge the Health Ombudsman report into the death of Shonisani Lethole during his stay at Tembisa Hospital.
This comes after Tembisa Hospital CEO Dr Lekopane Mogaladi was quoted as saying the institution will take the report on review.
The department’s spokesperson Kwara Kekana says anyone challenging the report will do so in their individual capacity.
“The department, and by extension its facilities which includes Tembisa Hospital, remains committed to implementing the recommendations of the report within the prescripts of the law once the department has concluded studying the report and its findings.
“Those who have expressed intention to challenge the report will be doing so in their individual capacities. The MEC for Health in Gauteng has already pronounced on the approach of the department as it relates to the report,” says Kekana.
Shonisani’s mother Patricia Lethole told the media on Thursday that the family is not surprised by the CEO’s unwillingness to step aside.
“What I have observed when this kind of things happens is that people with integrity normally step aside, so it is not surprising that the Tembisa Hospital CEO won’t step aside because I don’t think he is in the same level of pain with the families who experienced the loss.
“As a family, he hurt us a lot that man, even before the report was released, he was saying everything about my son, he treated my son as a liar. So even when he says he won’t step aside I am not surprised and even us we won't sit down and it is not about Shoni now, but serving the lives of other people.”
