The Department of Health in Gauteng says additional measures have been put in place to ensure service providers are paid within 30 days.

Earlier this year, telecommunications provider Telkom disconnected phone lines at some 80 clinics and 30 hospitals across the province due to outstanding payments.

The department owes over R1 billion for more than 19,000 unpaid invoices.

Spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says they are aware of the impact delayed payments have on suppliers, especially emerging businesses.

“We have been strengthening our processes, including our governance systems, to make sure that we deal with issues of duplication of invoices. Also that we improve the communication with service providers and, where possible, enter into payment arrangements.

“Some of the measures we have put in place include stopping recurring accruals by not uploading any work processed outside of the procurement plan.

“We are also implementing an inclusive approach payment strategy based on the available cash flow so that we don’t overcommit ourselves.”
