Gauteng lashes out at Parliament over etolls

The Gauteng Portfolio Committee of Roads and Transport says burdening citizens with etolls is not a solution to keep the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) afloat.

The etoll saga is heating up, while Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula still studies the documents submitted by stakeholders and civil rights groups over the road ahead.

He has also held discussions with Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, and Finance Minister Tito Mboweni on the matter.

On Friday, Chairperson of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Roads and Transport, Mosebenzi Zwane, told MPs government's interministerial task team set up to deal with the etoll issue should find solutions that do not just benefits, but also Sanral.

That was while Sanral briefed parliament on its annual performance.

Chairperson of Gauteng's Portfolio Committee, Dumisani Dakile, says they are disappointed with Zwane's statement, because it disregards 'socio economic factors facing Gauteng citizens'.

"We feel quite disappointed with the statement that has been issued by the National Committee on Roads and Transport. The chairperson has not taken into account or appreciated the level of dissatisfaction of the people of Gauteng," adds Dakile.

The Gauteng committee believes that etolls should be scrapped completely.

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) also adds that even reducing etolls would be futile.
