A man shot dead his children, aged 14 and 18, and wounded his wife before turning the gun on himself in Brackendowns, Alberton, on Thursday morning, Gauteng police said.
The man's ex-wife was apparently taking the children to school around 6.30am when the shooting happened, Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.
"The suspect, who was allegedly hiding behind a tree, spotted their vehicle and fired several shots into the vehicle with a 9mm pistol.
"He jumped into his vehicle and later allegedly shot himself."
Dlamini said the teenagers died on their way to hospital.
Netcare911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann said the woman was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Dlamini said it was believed the shooting was related to "domestic issues".
"Cases of double murder, attempted murder and inquest are being investigated."
He said the family's names could not be released until the next-of-kin had been informed.
