The Gauteng matric pass rate increased to 87 percent in 2013, the Gauteng education department said on Tuesday.

"This is the best matric result since the opening of democracy 20 years ago," education MEC Barbara Creecy said at the announcement of the results in Johannesburg. Various school districts also showed an improvement in 2013.

Gauteng East showed the biggest improvement in its matric pass rate, from 65.8 percent in 2012 to 87.5 percent in 2013. This was followed by Gauteng West, which improved from 77.4 percent in 2012 to 86.4 percent in 2013. Gauteng South went from 69.1 percent in 2012 to 84.6 in 2013.

"The Gauteng province sustained its position in the forefront of  education in the country," Creecy said.

The results also showed an improvement in performance in subjects including mathematics, physical science, geography, and economics. The number of distinctions increased by 2.3 percent to total 35,903.Creecy said billions of rand were invested into education in the province to ensure that young people flourished.

She dedicated the improvement in the matric results to former president Nelson Mandela. "Madiba taught us that education is central to the liberation of
the individual as well as the nation."
