The portal will be open from 8 am.

Chiloane made the announcement during a media briefing at Noordwyk Secondary School in Midrand.

He said all parents and guardians in Gauteng with children going to Grade 1 and Grade 8 must apply online, and all applications will only be processed through the department's online admissions system.

"The system is going to go live on Thursday, and it will close at midnight on the 12th of August. The reason why we started late is because there were a number of activities taking place, the first one being the SGB elections, which affected the planning and we also the national general elections".

Chiloane urged parents to follow all five steps to submit a complete application.

This includes the details of the parents or guardians, as well as the home address and pupil details.

Parents are also encouraged to select a maximum of five preferred schools.

"What is important about credentials is your phone number; give us a reliable number. Don’t lose your number because that is how we continuously update you as parents on how far the process is,” Chiloane said.

He warned that selecting only one or two preferred schools jeopardises the chances of their children being placed when the selected schools reach full capacity.

"We move from an assumption that any of the five schools is your preferred school. So, the five schools that you choose are schools that we assume are the schools that you are comfortable with as a parent, and your child can go to any of the chosen five schools, and you'd still be happy.”
