Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi announced that the system was live once again following a delay on Tuesday morning.

Parents will have until the 1 June to register and apply for their children to be enrolled in grade 1 and grade 8.

In the first 10 minutes going online, over 5000 parents successfully applied.

Lesufi told media that the system had to be reprogrammed after the site didn't recognize informal addresses.

Parents can now apply by using the name of the school in their areas.

Panyaza added that the site could now handle 20 000 hits per second.

While the online registration system has now gone live, Lesufi has appealed to parents to exercise some patience with the system.

Lesufi apologized to frustrated parents for the delay, but gave an assurance the site wouldn't crash again.

The MEC also stated that the system would no longer work on the first-come-first-serve basis.

Parents would now be put on two waiting lists, depending on how far they live from the school.

Lesufi hit back at his detractors, saying those opposed to the site were doing so because of their privilege.

"Those taking me to court (FEDSAS) are those that were benefiting from apartheid. I have one comment for them - bring it on," he said

Lesufi said the system would give all children an equal opportunity at getting placed in any school in Gauteng.
