Gauteng to pay R12.9bn for removal of e-tolls

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has confirmed that the provincial government will pay R12,9 billion towards the decommissioning of the e-toll system.
Lesufi met with Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana and national roads agency Sanral on Tuesday.
The Gauteng government had been given until the end of 2022 to reach a final decision with the national government over the future of e-tolls.
Last month Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said the national government would scrap e-tolls and absorb the e-tolls debt by paying 70% and the Gauteng government paying 30% of the debt.
In a statement, Lesufi said his government will raise funds through various revenue streams.
"The meeting resolved that the total amount to be paid by the provincial government is R12,9 billion (30% of R43 billion) using different revenue streams in the form of a hybrid model.
"The provincial government will undergo a consultative process with Gauteng residents on the hybrid model. The provincial government will negotiate a long-term repayment period on the 30% debt, and the timeframes are to be advised by the technical team. A long-term repayment period will ensure that we relieve the pressure on the provincial government fiscus."
