Gauteng police nab 1200 suspects in anti-crime operations

Police in Gauteng have arrested 1200 suspects during the latest round of anti-crime operations over the weekend.

The suspects were arrested for various crimes, including drunk driving, possession of drugs, business burglary and the contravention of Covid-19 regulations.  

Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says three suspects people were arrested for an illegal church gathering in Sedibeng.  

“An additional three suspects were arrested on Sunday at a church in Sebokeng, Zone 7 for contravening the Disaster Management Act in relation to provisions on gatherings after police dispersed a group of about 250 congregants. 

“All the arrested suspects will appear before different magistrate courts in Gauteng in due course.”

Masondo says police will continue to set up roadblocks across the province, as well as monitor shopping outlets and taxi ranks.

“People of Gauteng should therefore expect more roadblocks and stop-and-search operations.  

“Meanwhile, police visibility has been heightened at shopping malls, bus terminals, and taxi ranks to prevent robberies and other serious and violent crimes.”
