Gauteng police have declared their readiness to ensure a peaceful election period in the province.
This will be done through the deployment of law enforcement officials to ensure adequate security.
Gauteng Community Safety HOD Nontsikelelo Sisulu says the police will escort ballots to the more than 2000 voting stations throughout the province.
Sisulu briefed the media on their state of readiness on Thursday morning.
"We do need to ensure that there is heightened levels of security, and we recognised that Gauteng actually has the highest number of voters, as a result all levels of law enforcement will need to be heightened.
"Over 27.79 million voters are anticipated to cast their votes on the upcoming elections. This is the highest number since dawn of democracy in South Africa."
Sisulu added that there 47 warehouses for storage of ballot papers in the province.
"Law enforcement agencies are tasked with escorting ballot papers from these warehouses to the voting stations in all district voting stations."
South Africans will cast their ballots on 29 May.
