Gauteng Premier demands action following death of mental health patients
Updated | By Pieter van der Merwe
The Gauteng Health MEC, Qedani Mahlangu, will visit each and every mental healthcare facility in the province to ensure all patients are cared for in humane and appropriate conditions.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura on Friday expressed grave concern about the recent deaths of 36 mental health patients who died after being transferred to various NGOs.
"I was reassured by the MEC and the head of the department that the two of them would personally ensure that patients are in facilities that are appropriate," Makhura said.
Premier Makhura said what's even more disturbing is the fact that the recent matter is not an isolated incident.
He voiced his support of the decision to have the Health Ombuds investigate the matter.
"Every action should be taken where any of those facilities are not up to standard. So, while we are waiting for the investigation, that process will happen," he said.
