The newly appointed Mokgethi's urgent task is to lead the battle against gender-based violence in the province.

The two-year-old child was raped while at the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Pretoria.

Social Development spokesperson, Thabiso Hlongwane, says the department is committed to providing care for the vulnerable groups in society.

"Part of the Mandate for Social Development led by MEC Dr Mokgethi is to take care of the vulnerable groups in society, namely children, women, elderly persons, homeless, victims of gender-based violence and disability," says Hlongwane.

He added that the MEC is saddened by the high rate of gender-based violence in the province.

Hlongwane says the family of the victim in Tshwane will be provided with psychosomatic support and a full-time social worker to be with the family until they recover.
