In the first quarter, there was an increase of 6% compared to the same period between April and June 2022/2023.

Mawela said overall crime in Gauteng had decreased by 2.6% between July and September

"We have reduced the 17 community reported serious crimes by 2.6%, which means that we have recorded 2 892 counts less than the same period in 2022.

"The reduction is attributed to the three broad categories which include contact-related crime, property-related crime and other serious crime.”

CONTACT CRIME

Contact crimes reported to police increased by 0.1% for this quarter compared to the first quarter.

The overall category of contact crimes has increased with a small margin of 38 counts.

Mawela said the increase in contact crime is mainly attributed to robbery with aggravating circumstances and attempted murder.

"We have lost robbery with aggravating circumstances by 2%, which is 277 more counts as compared to the same period in 2022, while attempted murder increased by 140 counts, which translates to 8.9%."

CRIME DETECTED AS A RESULT OF POLICE ACTIONS

The crime detected as a result of police action included four offences, namely: illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, drug-related crimes, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and sexual offences detected as a result of police action.

"The detection of these crimes is dependent on the deployment of law enforcement and crime intelligence officers," Mawela said.

"For the quarter under review, Gauteng recorded 2 127 more counts which translates into an increase by 14.7% as compared to the same period last year."

PROPERTY-RELATED CRIME

Mawela added that the category of property-related crime has decreased by 5.4%, which translates to 1,281 fewer counts than the same period in 2022.

"The category comprises of burglary at residential premises, burglary at non-residential premises, theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle, theft out of or from motor vehicle and stock theft.

"We have managed to reduce all these offences except for theft out of or from a motor vehicle, which has increased by 1.3%, translating to 81 more counts as compared to last year."
