Gauteng Social Development removes food distribution rules
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The Gauteng Department of Social Development has withdrawn its guidelines for food donations and distribution.
The guidelines have come under fire from various quarters, including from NGOs and the Democratic Alliance (DA), for what they believe to be unnecessary red tape which ends up chasing away much-needed donors.
The department’s Thabiso Hlongwane says acting MEC Panyaza Lesufi acknowledges the work done by donors who continue to donate food parcels across province.
“The department is withdrawing the guidelines for food donations and distribution despite receiving donations in kind from all organizations, companies, civil society bodies and individual citizens across the province.
“However, this withdrawal doesn’t stop anybody from working with the department on food distribution.”

This comes amid warnings that the country's hunger crisis is being exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. A survey conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) on the impact and awareness of the coronavirus amongst South Africans, between 45% and 63% of participants reported that the lockdown would make it difficult to pay bills, debts, earn income, feed their families and keep their jobs.
