Gauteng taxi strike called off
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Thousands of Gauteng commuters can breathe a sigh of relief after a taxi strike planned for Monday had been called off.
Taxi operators planned to suspend operations on Monday.
The strike would have left thousands of people stranded.
Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Obed Sibasa says the strike is in response to Operation ke Molao which has resulted in over 500 taxis being impounded.
"We have impounded more than 500 taxis which were found to be unroadworthy. The operation was implemented due to an agreement between the national taxi associations and provincial government," he said.
Sibasa said the affected taxi associations confirmed the strike had been called off.
He encouraged commuters to report for work as usual.
The taxi associations were not immediately available for comment.
