Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has acknowledged the statement released by Curro Holdings regarding its recent social media post which conveyed a racially unbalanced narrative concerning the potential future careers of learners.Β

Pictures of learners made rounds on social media and caused an outcry over the weekend, showing a black learner depicted as a casher and a white learner as a veterinarian.
In a statement released on Tuesady, Curro Holdings stated that 'the post was in error and has been deleted.β
"Curro Holdings acknowledges that a post we published on social media portraying children in various workplace contexts was offensive due to the inappropriate stereotypes it depicted.
"Curro reiterates its commitment to diversity and non-racialism in our schools," reads the statement.
Curro further stated that they were urgently following their internal processes to fully understand the circumstances of the post in order to prevent the error from occurring again.
This after numerous took to social media platform X to voice out their fustrations.

Why does Curro give the black girl the dream of a job as a cashier while the white girls can dream to become vets? pic.twitter.com/6J5KcpCMOX
No offence to people making an honest living but being a cashier isnβt a career. Why would curro think they should have it on career day or whatever that was happening on that day? Let alone having a black child be one. Psychologically what does it say to that kid & her peers?

Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) spokesperson Steve Mabona says the acknowledgement, however, should be seen within the background of recent racial challenges that Curro has faced, one of which involved a black educator being called a monkey at one of its institutions.Β
"The GDE does not take such racial incidents lightly as they may be cultivating attitudes which reflect a society that has not fully dealt with racism, and this poses a threat not only to the education system and the model citizens it envisages to create, but also to a nation that still tirelessly works towards overcoming such attitudes.Β
"Therefore, there is an urgent need to investigate the constitutionality of Curroβs value system, and whether there is enough conscientisation of racial equality and human rights across all its institutions and personnel.Β
"It is also pertinent to verify whether there are indeed appropriate means of accountability for those who may refuse to embrace equality and non-racialism at its institutions."
