Staff, who are tasked with ensuring the safety of the trains, downed tools at the Midrand depot on Friday.

The company have assured commuters that the strike action will not affect the safety of trains as contingency plans have been put in place.

"We can assure passengers that we will not compromise on safety and the necessary maintenance works will be conducted to ensure that we continue to operate a safe service," said spokesperson Kesagee Nayager.

The employees, affiliated to the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), are accusing the company of reneging on a wage agreement.

According to Numsa's Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, the company agreed to contribute towards a housing allowance and pay a thirteenth cheque.

"The company has failed to honour its side of the agreement and as a result of this our members have now gone on strike."

Hlubi-Majola says at least 123 workers are on strike. The union is expected to meet with management on Friday.
