Gift of the Givers launches food programme
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Gift of the Givers has launched an extended food programme amid growing concern over hunger in poor communities around the country.
The extended lockdown, implemented by the government to contain the spread of coronavirus, has left many without an income.
The Gift of the Givers’ Hlengiwe Nkwanyana says programme was launched on Friday.
The organisation has also launched a toll-free emergency and counselling toll-free number, which Nkwanyana says was instantly flooded with calls.
"We have received numerous calls from our toll-free numbers where people say they are hungry, they have to feed a child who is crying because of hunger or someone who is very sick.”
The organisation aimed to deliver 100 000 food parcels across the country in the coming week.
