A five-year-old girl died after she was mauled by two pit bull terriers in White River, Mpumalanga on Tuesday.
Provincial police spokesperson Mtsholi Bhembe says the two dogs belonged to the little girl’s teacher, who accompanied her home since they were neighbours.
The dogs escaped from the teacher’s property after the girl got out of the car.
"Information at police disposal revealed that a 51-year-old woman, who is the owner of the dogs and also a neighbour to victim's parents, was reportedly coming from work, accompanied by the little girl.
“As soon as she opened the gate, the dogs are reported to have suddenly attacked the young, fatally wounding and killing her, " said Bhembe.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened.
The two dogs have since been put down.
