"Someone that is 100 years-old also achieved milestones," believes Makaneta.

The activist affiliated with the Education for Social Justice Foundation (ESJF) has written to President Cyril Ramaphosa to consider supplying all the country's elders with a cheque of R10 000 as part of Madiba's centenary commemorations.

The world is gearing up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Madiba's birth this week.

Former US president Barack Obama is expected to lead the tributes during the official function in Johannesburg.

"We believe as a gesture of honour to the former late president Nelson Mandela, all people who are turning 100 years old in 2018 should receive a stipend of R10 000 due to the great work Madiba did," says Makaneta.

He says this is a small token of appreciation for thousands who can "reduce hunger in their communities".

The late anti-apartheid leader's birth will be celebrated on July 18, an event the Nelson Mandela Foundation dubbed "take action and inspire change" in Madiba's name.
