Giyani to close all open trenches
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The Mopani District Municipality will embark on a special
operation to close all the incomplete and open manholes in the area.
This comes after six-year-old Nsuku Mhlongo died when he fell into a trench the past weekend.
The Mopani District Municipality Executive Mayor, Nkakareng Rakgoale, paid a visit to Mhlongo's family on Monday, to extend her support to the family.
Municipality spokesperson Witness Tiva, an agreement was reached between the municipality, the Department of Water and Sanitation and Lepelle Northern Water to close all abandoned construction trenches in the area.
"These are the areas that were abandoned by a contractor appointed by the Lepelle Northern Water," says Tiva.
He adds this measure is to ensure the safety of the community.
Meanwhile, some areas in Giyani are experiencing water shortages on Tuesday due to two burst pipes.
Tiva says water tankers are being deployed to Giyani to ensure the community has access to water until the matter is resolved.
"Our technicians are working on the problem to ensure water supply is restored in the area."
