Gauteng police spokesperson Katlego Mogale said the robbers, wearing balaclavas, broke into the couple’s home at 4.00am.
“It is alleged that at about 04h20 two suspects wearing balaclavas broke into a home on Swartberg Street, Glenvista and made their way into the bedroom where the owners of the house were asleep,” she said.
The robbers shouted at the couple that they would shoot them and a struggle ensued between the husband and one of the robbers.
Mogale said during the struggle, a shot went off and the robber fell off the balcony.
“A shot went off and he managed to fight off the assailant who fell off the third floor balcony to his death,”
The wife then allegedly reached for her licensed firearm under her pillow and shot the second robber.
Both robbers were certified dead on the scene. One died in the bedroom and the other outside the front door of the premises.
Mogale said a case of house robbery and an inquest has been opened for investigation.
