Gordhan calls for legal action against Eskom looters
Updated | By Neo Motloung
Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has called for legal action to be taken against Eskom employees who are doing business with the utility under proxy companies.
Gordhan was giving an update on the restricting of the state-owned power utility in Parliament on Tuesday.
He told the Committee for Public Enterprises that close to 1200 employees at Eskom are using proxy companies to loot the entity.
He explained that implicated employees would open companies in the names of their relatives and flout procurement procedures so family members would win the tenders.
Gordhan said while action has been taken against employees, more legal action still needs to be brought.
“But the key deterrent is going to be when the first of these sort people who have already stolen billions of rands are actually in court or in orange uniforms.”
