'Gordhan must prioritise education, employment'

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is set to deliver his budget speech tomorrow and students are clear on what they want him to prioritise. 

 

Experts believe this year's budget will be one of the toughest Gordhan has had to deliver.

 

It comes after months of student protests and mounting pressure for him to raise R28 billion in taxes.

 

Protests began in 2015, with students demanding free, quality higher education.

President Jacob Zuma has subsequently established a Commission of Inquiry into Higher Education to investigate the feasibility of free higher education.  

 

Fees is not the only burning issue in the country. South Africa's unemployment rate, while it has remained stable, is still far too high. 

 

Statistics South Africa's latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey indicates employment decreased by 0.6 percent placing the current unemployment figure at 26.5 percent. 

 

JacarandaFM News took to the streets to interview students on their expectations ahead of tomorrow's budget.
