Government condemns latest farm killing in the Free State

The Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza, has expressed her shock over the killing of a young farmer in the Free State.

Her office released a statement, saying Tebogo Machakela was shot in the head by a group of assailants.

“The death of Mr Tebogo Machakela is not only a great loss to his family and friends but to the  agricultural sector as a whole, “ says Didiza in the statement.

Didiza is calling on anyone who might have witnessed this senseless killing of the young farmer to assist the police to arrest the culprits.

“In the same light I call upon the police to live no stone unturned in making sure that culprits are put behind bars,” adds Didiza.

It comes while police in the Free State are also searching for the suspects who shot and killed a 56-year old farmer in Henneman and injured his son.

Police say the man's body was found, together with his injured 26-year-old son, by their helper in the early hours of Friday morning. Spokesperson Motantsi Makhele says the woman earlier received a call from the deceased's wife when she could not get a hold of him.

Attacks on farmers have been in the spotlight since the horror killing of young farm manager Brendin Horner in the Senekal area last month.

It led to emotions boiling over the amongst farming communities and Police Minister Bheki Cele visiting the area.

Sekwetje Mahlamba was denied bail in the Senekal Magistrate's Court on Thursday. Mahlamba's legal representative, Advocate Joseph Kgoelenya, told OFM News that his client had given him a direct instruction to first notify Magistrate Deon van Rooyen and then file papers with the high court.
