Government meets with SAA unions on the way ahead
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The inter-ministerial committee on South African Airways (SAA) has reached an agreement with unions about a new financially viable and competitive airline that should emerge from the business rescue process.
The government leaders and union representatives met on Tuesday after the refusal by government to make any more funding available for the cash strapped national airline
Spokesperson for the Department of Public Enterprises, Sam Mokokeli, says the unions were invited to submit their proposals on the restructuring of SAA and the future of jobs.
"The unions agreed that in solving SAA, some jobs will be lost and that employees that remain behind will need to sacrifice some of the unaffordable arrangements that had worsened the airline’s financial position," says Mokokeli.
The department said social plans will be developed to cushion the effect of job losses on the affected employees.
