Government thanks South Africa for Mandela prayers

The government has thanked all South Africans for their prayers for ailing former president Nelson Mandela, who remains in a critical condition in hospital in Pretoria.

 

"The response by South Africans collectively displayed the values and unity of ubuntu, which are the cornerstone of our democracy," Government Communications and Information System (GCIS) acting CEO Phumla Williams said in a statement on Wednesday.

 

"This sense of togetherness and belonging is one of the many legacies of Madiba and a demonstration that South Africa is truly a rainbow nation united in its diversity, as well as a demonstration of the leadership qualities of our icon."

 

The government also commended local media for the "sensitivity shown" while covering Mandela's stay in hospital.

 

Williams urged people to continue to pray for Mandela.

 

The anti-apartheid struggle icon was admitted to hospital on June 8 with a recurring lung infection.
