The Department of International Relations has called on the military in the Republic of Guinea to immediately release that county’s Alpha Condé (83) following a coup on Sunday.

"We have noted with great concern the ongoing political and security situation in the Republic of Guinea. We further call on for the immediate release of Prof Condé, unharmed and the African Union to actively intervene to ensure a speedy return to stability," said spokesperson Clayson Monyela
AFP on Monday reported that the special forces had dissolved Guinea's constitution and shutdown the country's land and air border.
The junta has also placed a country-wide curfew.
"The South African government further calls on the soldiers/military to exercise total restraint and refrain from political interference. In addition, South Africa urges all political actors and civil society to engage in meaningful dialogue in order to resolve the current political challenges facing the country," added Monyela.
