The government is developing an “alternative dispute resolution process” to compensate the families of Marikana mine workers, who were shot dead by the police, the Presidency said on Wednesday.

Thirty four mine workers were killed during a wage dispute in 2012.

Meanwhile, the affected families of the Marikana incidents are initiating civil claims against the government.

In September, President Zuma “announced the alternative mechanism to expedite the processing of claims arising from the incidents in Marikana both leading up to and on August 16, 2012”.

Zuma said that a judge, who would be assisted by several experts, would lead this process.

Spokesperson for the Presidency, Bongani Majola said Wednesday: “Government is aware of the anxiety of the families and will engage with the legal representatives of claimants in due course to take this process forward”. - ANA
