Govt: Mining houses need to prioritise safety
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
The Department of Mineral Resources has called on mining houses to continue to prioritise the safety of workers.
Four mineworkers lost their lives at Tau Lekoa Mine in North West following a rockfall caused by a tremor on Friday.
The bodies of the four miners were recovered during rescue operations during the course of the weekend, while one mineworker was found alive and rescued by other mineworkers on Friday.
The department’s Nathi Shabangu says mining houses should strive for zero fatalities.
“Investigation will have to go on and as it is now, the mine should be working on getting the families to be aware of the accident.”
Meanwhile, National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) national spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu has called for an investigation into claims that there were no escape routes for the miners.
“We will wait for the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy to conduct an investigation and get to the bottom of what happened.”
