Govt mulls sale of winter essentials amid lockdown

With the South African winter fast approaching, government says it’s considering the sale of winter essentials amid the national lockdown.

Only retailers selling essential goods have been allowed to operate since the start of the lockdown in March, but now government is looking to provide some relief to consumers as winter sets in.
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma told Parliament’s portfolio committee on Tuesday that more amendments to the regulations are still on the cards.
“Winter is going to set in, children’s winter clothes are going to be essential. Even some adults might need some winter clothes, blankets, heaters so that may have to opened, whether for a while or not.
“Those are things that refer to the well-being of people because winters in South Africa tend to be a bit harsh.”
The government has faced some backlash in the recent days for the changes in regulations, but Dlamini-Zuma says government must adapt to suit the changing situation.
“As new situations arise we have to cater for them, even during the lockdown.”
