Govt must step aside, allow private sector to run economy – economist
Updated | By Makhosazane Twala
Efficient Group Francois Stofberg believes the time has come for government to step aside and allow the private sector to run the economy.
Stofberg’s remarks come on the back of the latest consumer price inflation figures released on Wednesday.
It’s seen consumer price inflation reaching a 13-year high in June.
Consumer price inflation jumped to 7.4% in June - up from May's 6,5%.
Statistics South Africa says the June rate is the highest reading since 2009, with soaring food prices and transport services pushing up the annual CPI.
“The government has done too much of the wrong things, that’s why we have this problem,” says Stofberg.
“It’s time they do less and allow the private sector and private-public relations to do what they do, which is to create wealth, create jobs and create opportunities in South Africa.
“The government has intervened through the wrong policies and polities to such an extent we are in this position.”
