Last month the Maths and Physical Sciences papers were leaked on the eve of the exam.

The initial source for the Maths exam leak is believed to have been a private printing company.

The source for the Physical Science leak has now been revealed as government printers.

“Last time when the minister hosted a press briefing, we confirmed that the source of the leak was the printing company in Gauteng. We can now tell you that the second source of the leak is government printers,” the department’s director-general Mathanzima Mweli said on Thursday.

“The Physical Sciences full paper was leaked from government printers. The detail of that we’ll leave it for the Hawks – the whole paper leaked from government printers.”

The Department held a press briefing in Pretoria to give an update on the 2021 academic year.

Last week, the High Court in Pretoria ruled against Minister Angie Motshekga and ordered the department to scrap the exam re-write.

The department opted not to challenge the ruling even though it said it didn’t agree with parts of the court’s findings.

Motshekga said quality assurance body Umalusi is yet to rule on the credibility of the exams.

“We can say that, with the exception of the leakages that happened in the Physical Science paper and the Maths paper, the exams proceeded well.

“The North Gauteng court ruling we felt did not help much because it did not deal with the core issue that we had taken to court which is the credibility, the integrity and the fairness of the 2020 exams,” Motshekga added.

She admitted the department had not determined the full scale of the leaks but assured the Hawks are working around the clock to get persecute those implicated.
