African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa told residents of Mbombela in Mpumalanga that he believes government responded positively to the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said government tried everything it could to support businesses and households during the period.
Ramaphosa made the comments during the second day of the party’s voter registration drive on Sunday.
The past weekend was the only voter registration weekend ahead of the local government elections on November 1.
“Government responded very positively. We tried everything we can to give support to households and businesses. We laid out assistance and business packages more than any other country in the world and right up to about 10% of our GDP,” Ramaphosa said.

“That showed resolve and determination from our government to deal with Covid-19. From a Covid-point of view we have responded very strongly and from an economic point of view our efforts are underway and will bear fruit.”
During his visit in Mpumalanga, Ramaphosa received a much warmer welcome as was the case in Soweto on Saturday.
On Saturday, some residents residing in Naledi disrupted Ramaphosa's address to the community.
They were demanding electricity and water.
However, Ramaphosa assured residents that their electricty woes would be a thing of the past.
