"Betty Mantholwane Modisakeng of Section 2 in Ledig died yesterday from smoke inhalation after her RDP house caught fire," Captain Paul Ramaloko said on Thursday.

"A fire broke [out] in the bedroom of the 103-year-old Mrs Modisakeng, in the early hours of yesterday. She got trapped in the house because her 51-year-old grandson had locked the exit door and slept over at a nearby section."

Neighbours spotted smoke coming from her house and opened the door with a crow bar and extinguished the fire.

"She was found next to the main door next to her walking stick."

She was believed to have been one of the oldest people in the North West.
