Mapisa-Nqakula was speaking at a special ceremony, hosted by Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, to honour firefighters who battled for days to contain the fire.

The event was hosted at the Roeland Fire Station in Cape Town on Wednesday.

“This has taught us that what is important also is life. We are grateful that not a single firefighter lost his or her life in this crisis,” she said.

Mapisa-Nqakula added that her focus now is to ensure the continued work of Parliament.

“South Africa stands united behind you, whenever a crisis of this magnitude erupts, South Africans have a way of finding one another and stand together.

"I think what has happened to us here destruction of that simple of unity of the people of South Africa has really brought us together in a manner that you can’t imagine.

"Right now, it is not about who is in charge, it is not about who is leading it is about South Africans coming together, holding hands and finding a way to move forward. I can assure you that we will continue with the work of Parliament. This is a temporary inconvenience."
