The grinch that stole Christmas? Another big fuel price hike for December
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
Consumers will have to dig a little deeper into their pockets this December - not just for food, entertainment or festive getaways but also for fuel.
This after the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy announced the latest adjustments to fuel prices on Monday.
Consumers can expect to pay 81 cents more per litre of petrol from Wednesday.
This will put the price of both grades of petrol above R20 per litre.
Diesel will also increase by more than 72 cents per litre, while illuminating paraffin will cost 42 cents more per litre.
The department’s spokesperson Robert Maake says a weaker rand against the dollar is among the reasons for the higher prices.
“The Rand depreciated against the US Dollar during the period under review, on average, when compared to the previous period. The average Rand/US Dollar exchange rate for the period 28 October 2021 to 25 November 2021 was 15.3891 compared to 14.8175 during the previous period. This led to a higher contribution to the Basic Fuel Prices on petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin.”
This is the second major hike in two months following November’s ‘catastrophic’ price hike of R1.21 for a litre of petrol and R1.48 for a litre of diesel.
