Guptas fail in bid for more time to halt freezing of assets

The Bloemfontein High Court has dismissed an application by the Guptas for more time to allow them to oppose an application by the NPA for an interim restraint order against one of their companies.

The same court granted the interim restraint order against Islandsite Investments last year.
The company, which is in business rescue, is owned by the Gupta family.
On Friday, the court dismissed a last-minute application brought by the directors of Islandsite as they failed to obtain the approval of the business rescue practitioners.
Spokesperson for the NPA’s Investigating Directorate Sindisiwe Seboka says the full reasons for the dismissal will be provided in a written judgment next week.

"The Bloemfontein High Court has today dismissed a last minute application brought by the Directors of Gupta-owned Islandsite to postpone the return day of the provisional restraint order against Islandsite, Iqbal Sharma, and others.
"They sought a postponement pending their application to the SCA to appeal against the August 2021 ruling of Musi JP that the business rescue practitioners of Islandsite, not the Directors, have authority to represent Islandsite in the restraint proceedings.”
Arguments on the confirmation of the restraint order will be heard in October.
