Updated | By Eva Chipa
Advisor to
the Department of Basic Education, Professor Martin Gustafsson, has revealed
that half of the 2021 academic year has already been lost.
He was speaking during a briefing on Sunday with Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga on the education sector's response to Covid-19.
“Looking to the 2021 year, approximately half of the school year has been lost for a very large number of learners. We have monitoring that tells us that the preferred approach across the system is three days a week for schooling, children are losing two days a week in the system.
“We can be certain there are losses throughout the system (and) what is particularly concerning is the losses at foundation phase, because this is were fundamental skills are developed which then serve learners for their entire schooling.”
Gustafsson further explained the disruptions has had a significant impact on pupils
